Breast reconstruction aims to restore the shape and appearance of the breast following mastectomy or lumpectomy for breast cancer. A range of reconstruction options are available, tailored to your needs, goals, and stage of recovery. Dr Yez can guide you through each option and provide the information you need to make a fully informed decision about your care.
Autologous Breast Reconstruction
Autologous breast reconstruction uses tissue from your own body—such as skin, fat, and rarely muscle—to rebuild the shape of the breast after mastectomy. Common donor sites include the lower abdomen, inner thighs, or the back. This approach can offer a more natural look and feel compared to implants, and the results are permanent. While it involves a longer surgery, most patients value the lasting, natural result and the ability to avoid implants. There is evidence patient reported outcomes are superior especially in women who require radiotherapy to treat their breast cancer. Dr Yez will discuss the most suitable options for your situation, based on your body shape, desired breast volume and personal goals, helping you make an informed decision on whether this technique is best for you.

Implant Based Breast Reconstruction
Implant-based breast reconstruction is another option for restoring the volume and shape of the breast after mastectomy. This technique involves using a silicone or saline implant to rebuild breast volume, either in a single procedure during mastectomy (Direct To Implant) or through a staged process with a temporary tissue expander inserted initially. A staged approach utilizing an expander may be performed at the time of mastectomy (immediate reconstruction) or at a later stage (delayed reconstruction), depending on your treatment plan and preferences. Implant-based reconstruction generally involves a shorter surgery and recovery time with no donor sites required as compared to tissue-based methods, but multiple outpatient visits may be necessary if using expanders. Dr Yez will guide you through your options and help determine whether this approach is best suited to your needs and goals.
